Supporting Andrea, not Maggie

Finally got round to watching BBC4’s “Margaret Thatcher: The Long Road to Finchley”, and I’m glad I did. Top quality entertainment, and Andrea Riseborough must be quite an actor to get an audience that included me on her side. I shared every disappointment of the young Margaret Roberts as she suffered rejection after rejection at the hands of the male, upper class establishment of the 1950s Conservative Party.

Extremely witty and well-written, Riseborough herself was unexpectantly, surprisingly brilliant. Maybe a bit too knowing in parts – for example, when, as a young research scientist, Ms Roberts tells a colleague that if she were in charge every child would have plenty of free milk…
