Sole man

WHAT is it with Iraqis and footwear?

In 2003 one of the iconic news images of the invasion was of local Iraqis pulling down a statue of Saddam and then hitting its face with their flip flops. There seemed to be something profound in the act.

And now, President Bush gets two shoes thrown at him by an Iraqi journalist during a news conference.

I trust the secret service inspected the missiles to make sure they weren’t laced with anything.

  1. It’s supposed to be a mark of deep insult, as is calling a person “a dog”, because both are seen as dirty.

I guess he must have used his own shoes, would have looked odd carrying a spare pair.

Bush did manage to dodge them and carry on, so no harm done.

Me and my labour supporting fanat- sorry friend, discussed this incident.

With some irony this journalist will be going down in history as a hero of Iraqi Free Speech.

If he’d have tried that just 6 years ago his life would have been measured in seconds, probably being shot quite quickly by one of Hussein’s bodyguards, if not Saddam himself.

Instead, he gave the greatest insult to a man you can give in the Arabic world, and he’s a folklore hero!

Like Bush or hate him. He’s done what he set out to do.

  5. I love the way Bush just didn’t get it – he didn’t understand the deep insult that it was. Why bother learning about the customs of countries you invade? They’re all forners anyway.

Perhaps Bush does know and doesn’t really care too much.

He probably knows that some people dislike him, he’ll just add the reporter to the list.

The reporter is going to become rather well off I suspect, assuming he gets out of the Iraqi gaol fairly quickly. Which is lucky for him as I don’t see him being allowed in to many more top level speeches by political leaders.

I wish someone threw some shoes in your direction, Tom.
